Bridging Gaps Through Volunteerism

SVO operates on the strength of its volunteers, engaging at the grassroots level in Chad, Sweden, and Sudan to empower the most vulnerable refugees. By offering education for disabled children, empowering women, and improving elderly care, SVO volunteers are making a tangible difference in the lives of those with little to no prospects of returning home.

Addressing the Refugee Crisis Beyond Borders

The refugee crisis, often highlighted in European narratives, is just the tip of the iceberg. For every refugee that makes it to Europe, thousands remain in their homelands or neighboring countries like Chad, facing war, violence, and hunger. SVO believes in making a meaningful difference for these individuals by providing education, care, and hope.

Realistic Idealists Dreaming of a Better Future

SVO's approach is rooted in the belief that refugees themselves can become agents of positive change. With most of SVO's leadership having experienced life as refugees, the organization is uniquely positioned to understand and address the challenges faced by displaced populations.

The Solution

SVO's approach is rooted in the belief that refugees themselves can become agents of positive change. With most of SVO's leadership having experienced life as refugees, the organization is uniquely positioned to understand and address the challenges faced by displaced populations.

SVO is focussing on the following

Support for women. A precondition for a better life for women. Women are much more exposed in the camps than men are. Equality is basically non-existing. SVO works actively with women to improve their lives in the camps. School for disabled children. In 2016 SVO started a school for disabled children in the refugee camp of Kounongo. It was the first school of that kind in all of Chad. Children from neighbouring local villages are also welcome in this school. A big plus for cooperation even between refugees and the local community. Food production. Possibilities to grow food to make self-sufficiency possible: SVO focusses on adults with disabilities: Due to the atrocities during the conflicts in Sudan, many people have disabilities, with little hope for support. Finding a way for them to support themselves is vital for them not to be entirely marginalised. Care for elderly. Elderly people are particularly vulnerable in the refugee camps. They often starve and existing in miserable conditions. SVOS volunteers provide them with healthy food, with basic care, and social contact. Last but not least. All operations in Sweden are being conducted to ensure that SVO can do its work in Chad. We work in very close cooperation, on a daily basis to ensure that SVO volunteers in Sweden can respond to what their fellow volunteers in Chad need most. It is a unique way of cooperating, since the majority of volunteers in Sweden share the experience of both war and life as a refugee. Whenever something is needed, be it knowledge, economic resources or materials, we try to provide them from here in Sweden. We are not people of great economic wealth and power. Our power lies in the solidarity we feel and in our commitment to make positive change happen.
